Fraud Safety Center

How to recognize scams, protect your money, and report suspicious activity.

How to stay safe

  • • Always inspect the vehicle in person before paying.
  • • Meet in a public, well-lit place (a police station parking lot is ideal).
  • • Bring a trusted friend or mechanic with you.
  • • Verify the title is in the seller's legal name.
  • • Use a cashier's check or bank-to-bank transfer at the time of pickup. Never wire money or use cryptocurrency.
  • • Run a vehicle history report (Carfax) before committing.

Red flags to watch for

  • • Price is dramatically below market value.
  • • Seller refuses to meet in person or let you inspect the car.
  • • Asks for wire transfer, Western Union, gift cards, or crypto.
  • • Title is "in transit," "with the bank," or in someone else's name.
  • • Pressure to act fast or pay a deposit before viewing.
  • • Communication only by text/email — never by phone or in person.
