Fraud Safety Center
How to recognize scams, protect your money, and report suspicious activity.
How to stay safe
- • Always inspect the vehicle in person before paying.
- • Meet in a public, well-lit place (a police station parking lot is ideal).
- • Bring a trusted friend or mechanic with you.
- • Verify the title is in the seller's legal name.
- • Use a cashier's check or bank-to-bank transfer at the time of pickup. Never wire money or use cryptocurrency.
- • Run a vehicle history report (Carfax) before committing.
Red flags to watch for
- • Price is dramatically below market value.
- • Seller refuses to meet in person or let you inspect the car.
- • Asks for wire transfer, Western Union, gift cards, or crypto.
- • Title is "in transit," "with the bank," or in someone else's name.
- • Pressure to act fast or pay a deposit before viewing.
- • Communication only by text/email — never by phone or in person.
